Chapter 7

Recovery

Thursday, 14 January

I’m not feeling that great today; my throat is sore where I had the tube down there during the surgery. My drain is filling up and getting pretty heavy, so it pulls on the wound and also makes it difficult for me to get comfortable. I have to take off my main dressing today and I’m worried about that hurting. Keith has come up with a plan; first, I have to take a shower in the hope that might loosen the dressing, then, I must sit on the bed to remove the dressing in case I faint!

Later – the plan worked and I feel much better! I had the shower, but only with Keith’s help. He has bought me a lovely natural sponge and we used that to wash my hair and soak the dressing. Then I lay on the bed and between us we worked the dressing loose and eventually got it off. Keith cried a bit, as he said just a few weeks ago I was a lively, healthy person, full of life and now I’m an invalid with probably worse to come. Amy came over and brought Lilli with some flowers and a penguin for me! Lilli was so careful with me, I covered up my drain as Amy is squeamish and I didn’t want Lilli to be upset.

Mum has been to see me, my brother fetched her around yesterday. She was very quiet and neither of us mentioned her appalling behaviour. I think if she tried to justify it, I would find it hard to listen. It is her birthday tomorrow and as I won’t be able to spend it with her, we have bought some cake and soft drinks for all the residents. Keith will take it around for after lunch.
